[Fremont, CA] Mission Peak

Climbing Mission Peak has become Fremont's Most Popular attraction. It is a 2000+ feet elevation climb to the top. The path is rugged, uneven and mostly uphill with very little shade. The strenuous hike is definitely not for the fainthearted. Besides bringing plenty of water and maybe a snack or two, what you need to bring with you is well-power. I have seen many groups start with an air of joyous excitement to see them turn around in painful defeat.

This is NOT an easy hike!

It is excruciating especially for those of us that do not exercise on a regular basis but are more or less healthy. You need to be smart when climbing Mission Peak. Pace yourself, take plenty of breaks, and keep your drive alive. It's hard especially when your lungs are bursting, and your legs feel as if they are going to give out. It happens to all of us, but the difference between those that reach the top and those that do not is drive and smart hiking.

So the most popular entrance is Sanford Avenue where there is a small parking lot of that holds up to 47 cars, but on a busy weekend, up to 300 cars can be found around the neighborhood. Mission Peak's increase in popularity has caused a lot of pain for the people that live in the area which is why the city is not contemplating on extending the parking situation, and they did cut back on the park hours. So when you come, please be respectful, don't be too loud, and pick up after yourselves.

Now let's say you made it! You have reached to the Peak's famous "Mission Peeker" also known as the Peak's Pole. On a busy day you will notice a line of hikers climbing on and posing with the pole. Taking pictures with Mission Peeker has become a tradition and a must. Heck, I've done it every time I am there. It's like a reward for all your hard work. But what most don't know is why the pole is there is the 1st place.

So here's a little history about this pole.

"Mission Peeker" was created by Sculptor and Park Ranger Leonard Page in 1990. It was to promote environmental awareness. Also, sealed inside the steel pole is a time capsule that will be excavated and opened after 2090. It is said the capsule holds articles and photographs said to be focus on rainforest preservation, Aids, and homelessness, as well as images of pop culture in the 1990s.

You will also notice look out tubes attached to the vertical six foot steel pole. These are sight tubes that point to various bay area cities, hence the name "Peekers".

Now you know more of why this pole is up here.

A picture with the pole is not the only reward you get from climbing Mission Peak. In fact throughout the hike there are many vista points, marked by benches for you to stop and take in the view of Silicon Valley. As you climb, the bigger the view will get. So you can expect the best view is at the top!

From personal experience, this hike is one of the most excellerating climbs I have ever went through. There are so many emotions on this 2-3 hour climb. Pain, stubbornness, excitement, dread and pure bliss. Have fun hiking!

Happy Wandering, Alice.
